Course Overview
The second of a series of three lectures pertaining to transfusions. This is designed to educate learners who wish to become familiar with the operation of autotransfusions systems. It also serves as a refresher course for those individuals already performing autotransfusion procedures.
The lecture covers a brief review of the history of blood transfusions; discusses how autotransfusion plays a significant role in blood management and blood conservation; reviews indications and contraindications for the use of autotransfusion; discuss surgical procedures that would benefit from the use of autotransfusion and differentiate the potential risks for both allogeneic and autologous blood transfusions.
